Kerchiefs were most popular headwear in medieval period.
Linen kerchief, also known as a nałęczka – Elegance and Tradition
Simple rectangular kerchief is a characteristic scarf worn by women in the Middle Ages. It was a symbol of modesty, widowhood, and a sign of belonging to a specific social group. Wearing it resulted from the characteristic medieval style of covering women's hair; there were special orders prohibiting entering church with uncovered hair and fancy hairstyles.
Today, it is a unique addition to historical costumes, which perfectly reflects the spirit of the era.
How was a kerchiefs worn?
A nałęczka was usually made of delicate, light fabrics, such as linen or silk. It was placed on the head in the form of a headband or a fancy covering, often pinned around the face and shoulders. They could be braided into elegant draperies or worn modestly, tightly covering the hair. Depending on the region and social status, the nałęczka was decorated with embroidery, lace or glass beads. They were usually pined with pins to cloth band called „fillet”.
Scarves were also worn under the neck.
