Reconstruction of the late medieval arming doublet. Arming doublets were a very specyfic kind of gambesons, used in late XV th century, mainly used by mercenaries, infantry, archers and city guards. In middle ages gambesons were most popular and the cheapest protection available. Infantry used to have them as the only protection, rich men-at-arms and knights used them as a protection against bruises and abrasions. Moreover it was a clever way of damping the shock of the hits.

Initially, as other clothing with a rather simple cut, they underwent various modifications in later periods. In this case, the doublet was most often worn as a stand-alone protection. It is characterized by a significant shortening, unlike other gambesons, and a modification of the cut.

Cut of 8 parts plus sleeves and collar. Cut in waist. Leather stripes are sewn on the outer layers of linen. Tied with 4 pairs of laces. For additional payment it is possible to make puffed sleeves

Gambesons made by our company consist of the following farbics:

-linen outer layer

-linen lining

-cotton strenghtening layer

-filling made of a mixture of natural and artificial fibers

As standard, the doublet has one layer of filling plus additional reinforcement on the chest, hips, shoulders, spine and loins, as well as biceps, elbows and forearms. The sleeves under the armpits and in the bends of the elbows are not filled in order to facilitate the free movement of the hand. For better mobility, it is possible to sew an elliptical wedge under the armpit free of charge
