Chaperon – Courtly Headgear
The chaperon was a popular headgear in medieval Europe from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Initially a simple hood with a hood or long tail (known as a cornette), it evolved over time into a decorative garment. The chaperon served a practical purpose – protecting against wind and rain – but also a decorative one: richly decorated versions became a symbol of social status and elegance.
