Medieval Hood – Historical Headwear

A medieval hood was one of the most distinctive and practical elements of historical clothing. It protected the head, neck and shoulders from cold, wind and rain, while also forming an important part of the medieval silhouette. Hoods were worn by people from different social groups, from peasants and townspeople to members of the knightly class.

Historical hoods were most commonly made from wool, valued for its warmth and practical properties. Depending on the period, region and current fashion, they took many different forms – from simple, short hoods to more elaborate versions with a long tail known as a liripipe. Particularly striking hoods with long liripipes appear frequently in 14th- and 15th-century iconography and gradually became a characteristic feature of late medieval fashion.

The hood was primarily an element of civilian clothing, although it could also be used as an additional protective layer in clothing associated with military activity.

Today, a medieval hood is one of the basic elements of clothing used in historical reenactment. It pairs well with a tunic, cotte, doublet or other pieces of medieval clothing. It is suitable for historical events, reenactments, medieval fairs, LARPs and costumes inspired by the Middle Ages.

Thanks to its simple and functional form, a medieval hood can also be an interesting addition to modern folk, fantasy and historically inspired outfits.
