The surcoat is a distinctive medieval dress, popular from the 13th to the 15th centuries. It was an outer garment worn over a fitted tunic or cotte, which over time became a symbol of medieval fashion. The surcoat’s cut evolved from simple, loose-fitting styles to more fitted versions that accentuated the figure.
One of the most recognizable variants was the so-called surcoat with large side openings, the corset fendu, which we present here. These openings exposed the dress underneath and allowed for freedom of movement. Courtly versions were richly decorated with embroidery, fur, trim, and appliqués of silk or cloth of gold.
The medieval surcoat was made of luxurious fabrics such as velvet, wool, or brocade, often lined with natural linen. The presented model is made of high-quality wool with a linen lining and is characterized by an elegant cut, widened with gussets, which perfectly reflects the spirit of medieval fashion.
