In the Middle Ages, purses, also known as pouches or wallets, were an essential accessory for both women and men. Because clothing lacked pockets, the purse served as a practical storage space, storing money, keys, amulets, combs, and small personal items.
They were most often made of leather, linen, or wool, and their shape and decorations depended on the owner’s status. Simple, laced purses were worn by townspeople and pilgrims, while wealthy individuals chose ornate wallets embroidered or trimmed with metal appliqués. Purses were often hung on a belt or slung over the shoulder.
Today, faithful reconstructions of medieval purses allow us to fully recreate the appearance of ancient costumes – combining authenticity, functionality, and craftsmanship.
