In middle ages gambesons were most popular and the cheapest protection available. Infantry used to have them as the only protection, rich men-at-arms and knights used them as a protection against bruises and abrasions. Moreover it was a clever way of damping the shock of the hits. In early middle ages cuts of the gambesons were simplified loosely fitting as it was with other garments at this time. In XIV th centurygambesons began to be shorter and close fitting, n this period padded garments were adapted to daily use especially by nobles and rich burghers.
