At Bonum Sartores, we specialize in crafting historical clothing, including high-quality gambesons inspired by medieval designs. Our featured model is one of the simplest and most historically accurate designs, based on popular depictions such as those found in Grand Chronique d'France. It features horizontal quilting on the body and sleeves, a mid-thigh length, and a convenient single-cord fastening.
During the Middle Ages, gambesons (also known as medieval padded armour) were a widely used form of protection. For the poorest warriors, it was often the only available defense, while wealthier infantry and knights used it as additional padding beneath armour. Over time, gambeson designs evolved—by the 14th century, they became shorter and more form-fitting, and by the late medieval period, quilted clothing became a common element of everyday wear.
Each gambeson made by Bonum Sartores consists of:
✔ An outer layer of linen
✔ A linen lining
✔ Linen reinforcement beneath the outer layer
✔ Natural wool padding
Standardly, our medieval padded armour includes a single layer of padding on the body and sleeves, with extra reinforcement at key areas: chest, hips, shoulders, spine, lower back, biceps, elbows, and forearms. To ensure maximum mobility, the underarm and elbow crease areas are left unpadded. Additionally, we offer a free optional armpit gusset for even greater freedom of movement.
✅ Historical accuracy – based on authentic medieval sources
✅ Premium materials – natural linen and wool for comfort and durability
✅ Superior fit and comfort – thoughtfully designed for movement and protection
✅ Handcrafted quality – each gambeson is carefully sewn with attention to detail
